Washer & Dryer
A washer that is not spinning can be caused by many things.
Here's what you can do before you call for the help of one of our professionals. If your washer has a drain filter that is visible at either the bottom left or right of the machine, verify that there is nothing clogging it up.

If you notice that it is not spinning when trying to wash certain loads (towels, sheets, etc.), this can simply be because the machine is having a hard time balancing the loaded items. If it is a front load unit, make sure you are not overcharging your machine (about 2/3 full is the maximum). If is it a top load unit you are dealing with, it can be as simple as opening up the lid and redistributing the items.

The solution for this is usually quite simple.
However, it is usually not mentioned in your user manual.

Try wiping the inner door glass clean (on the edges where the door makes contact with the door seal), and also wiping the outer lip of the door seal, as well as any accumulations on or around it. If it is still leaking, there is a very good chance that the seal must be replaced.
An intermittent loud knocking noise is completely normal for machines.
This is what happens when the clothes inside of the machine are not properly balanced during the spinning stage of the cycle. Simply try moving around the clothes and so that they are evenly distributed.

Some units (more common in front load models) will having a knocking noise every time the machine goes into the spin cycle. This is caused by the balancing system which uses weights, such as metal beads and oil, inside of a sealed ring which is mounted directly on the rotating tub. When the washer will begin to accelerate, the beads and oil and all stuck together at the bottom, causing it to be unbalanced by default. As the tub accelerates, the knocking noise represents the beads rolling into position to help balance. Once the beads are in position, the tub will stop knocking.
If there is knocking at high speeds, this can be caused by a slightly unbalanced load (this is more common with heavy loads)

The theory behind a dryer is quite simple.

Hot air is produced to absorb humidity. A turning drum helps disperse the clothes allowing them to be more exposed to the hot air. A blower which sucks the hot and humid air out of the machine, and blows it outside via a ventilation tube. If there is heat in the machine, and the drum is turning, this usually means that the ventilation is obstructed. It is very important to have your homes ventilation tubes cleaned regularly. If they are not clean, the hot and humid air stays inside of the drum, which causes overheating in the appliance, and may lead to a fire.
Why does my dryer take several hours/cycles to dry the load?
Make sure that your cold AND hot water valves are completely turned on.
Even if you are only washing with cold water cycles, most new machines have temperature sensors inside of the tub. When the water is too cold (during the winter mostly), the machine will demand hot water to enter machine, as it is colder than the recommended temperature as per the model.

The problem can also be caused by your drain. If your drain tube is pushed too far into the drain pipe of your home, this will cause the water to be siphoned out of the machine, directly into the drain. It is recommended to push the tube in no further than 12 inches.
